Daybreak at Pentecost
03:17
|
|||
Scattered on the wind
To find their homes again
The soaring birds fly north to Edmonton
Faith over fear
Scattered on the ground
The seeds will put roots down
And grow into a forest on The Sound
Faith over fear
Scattered on the plains
Secluded and in pain
The faithful now must kneel at home and pray
Faith over fear
Hidden in the trees
The deer walk quietly
A mother hiding fawns among the leaves
Faith over fear
Hidden in the clouds
The rainwater abounds
As flowers await its falling to the ground
Faith over fear
Hidden in their homes
The faithful on their own
Are more together than they've ever known
Faith over fear
The darkness of the night
May take away our sight
But soon the bright and shining star will rise
Faith over fear
Our dark society
May leave us hungry
But someday soon we'll wake up and be free
Faith over fear
The darkness in our hearts
Of spirits badly scarred
Is there to show the daybreak when it starts
And it starts with
Faith over fear

Morgan County
02:49
|
|||
We left a white and icy street
And set our eyes out East
We rose a bright and early dawn
And took our songs along
The fields and hills were waking up
But we were looking rough
And Morgan County called our names
We had to tame the plain
Bridge
When I looked out and saw the fields wide open
I knew that I would never be the same
Chorus
I got my shotgun loaded up
Got my hat and drove my truck
And headed out to hunt the Eastern Plains
A cold wind blew out of the West
As if to be our test
But I'm a Colorado man
Rugged, mean, and tan
Bridge and Chorus
We did our shooting clean and neat
And stayed quick on our feet
We missed a lot and hit a few
That made our rabbit stew
Bridge and Chorus
We cooked a supper for our friends
And told them where we'd been
And they looked out and saw the plains
Got up and did the same
Bridge and Chorus

She Flies
03:04
|
|||
Chorus:
When her wings are bleeding,
She flies
When her heart is broken,
She flies
When life gets her down,
She still flies. She still flies.
Behind the tough wounds and harsh smile,
She refuses to drown, to sink.
She uses her pain to repair and renew her.
After she fled to the highest of highs,
She does not look back anymore.
Because so much light has come out of her darkness.
Chorus
Behind the tough wounds and harsh smile,
She refuses to drown, to sink.
She uses her pain to repair and renew her.
She is thankful for the people in her life,
Who supported and showed her the way.
Without their caring hearts she would have never make this far.
Chorus
And most of all, she is thankful to God.

Spread Your Wings
05:21
|
|||
Last Saturday I left this place and took a long hard drive
I wound through all the mountain roads beneath a clear blue sky
I went with friends to Gunnison to get away a while
And wound up in a café after many weary miles
I asked an older waitress for some coffee and a light
She looked up from her notepad and she asked me with a smile
“What brings you to the desert and a little town like this?”
I said I had to get away from all life’s busyness
She told me, “Son I’ve learned one thing from all my years on earth
There ain’t no place that makes you find how much your life is worth
Yea, I was young and restless for the best years of my life,
And I’ll tell you you can always find a chance to live yours right.”
Chorus:
You just spread your wings
You don’t have to do it right
Keep your head held high
And someday you will find that you can fly
We wandered into Crested Butte one rainy afternoon
And wound up in a gallery with shades of white and blue
The artist there, she asked us how we came to find her store
We told her that our lives at home had left us wanting more
She told us she had tried to paint the perfect scene for years
But all she found was change and hardship living in her fears
She looked at me and said with tender kindness in her face,
“Don’t wait for life to put you in the perfect time or place
Yea, I’ve been painting pictures for the rich and famous too
But they don’t seem much happier than either me or you
We’ve all got burdens on our backs that can be hard to bear
But all of us can make it through with a little love and care”
I went back to my hometown for a funeral last week
My grandmother had died out in the shadow of Pikes Peak
The family were beside themselves with sorrow and with grief
So I went home to offer what I could for their relief
The wake was sad and somber as the family said goodbye
And every child and grandchild couldn’t dry their tired eyes
One daughter spoke to everyone with courage and with care
She told them to remember that their mother still was there
The day before I sang for her a Carter Family song
The circle can’t be broken though our suffering lasts so long
I think that she believed it when she spoke there at that wake
She said, “I know our mother’s gone, but it’ll be okay.”
She’s gonna spread her wings
And hold us all inside
We might not feel quite right
But you all know that she’d want us to smile
Chorus

Thieves of Crown Jewels
04:35
|
|||
I picked up my bags and I walked to the curb and said I’m really leaving this time
I’ll love you as humans but I want no part in the problem you’re trying to hide
We killed Dr. King and imprisoned his people and everyone that you don’t like
We’ve taken their votes but now I’m casting mine; I won’t stand for deception and lies
Every damn day I hear more of the same from this ignorant comfortable town:
“Protecting this system means killing some bandits and it's only just chance their skin's brown"
"It’s not that we’re racist, we just want what’s best for the people that we hang around
We elected some horrible bullies; we were in for a penny now we’re in for a pound”
Chorus:
Justice means nothing if it’s only fair for a few
If we break it for some then it’s broken for me and you too
There aren’t any winners when we pick the ones who will lose
We won’t put a crown on a head, we’re just thieves of crown jewels
Thieves of crown jewels
Recession was hard but now I’m convinced that it’s finally turning around
Down at the border the worth of a life is sure starting to work it’s way down
God might see souls as the same in their value but that’s not what I’ve ever found
We’re killing real people for putting their feet on the wrong part of the ground
Chorus
Guthrie had sung about Los Gatos Canyon and all the atrocities then
But we still commit war crimes and act so surprised when we hear about them from our friends
Well a life is a life and if you’re not trying to save them you’re causing their end
We can’t live with ourselves in this cycle for long it’s not if the guilt kills us but when
Chorus

Your Heart Is Amazing
03:42
|
|||
Sunset in Kansas City
We'll watch the blizzard blow
At least it's another day
I don't have to face my home
It's not that I won't recover
But what's it worth without her?
One more day with my brother
Might help to heal that wound
I'm here in a city of millions
Not one is close to me
My heart's so tired and weary
Sorrow and its tyranny
I just want someone to talk to
A light for my weary eyes
Don't know what I'd do without you
My friend from the Great Divid
Chorus:
Love never fades
Though the darkness can hide it away
I'm so amazed at the heart in you
I never knew
The life in you was so beautiful
I'm so amazed at the heart in you—
It's sad the way I'm thinking
So dark and meaningless
My solace is everywhere
Living in your gentleness
Let's all admit we're broken
But where do we go from here?
In just the few words you've spoken
You wiped away all my tears
Chorus
We'll hang ourselves in bedrooms
Or we'll hang together now
We'll carry each other's burdens
Or break a Living Law
You've been right there beside me
I hope I'll do the same
I come from a world of madness
Stuck in the devil's game
I've dreamt of a day that's coming
When I'll have finally pulled through
I hope it's a life worth living
And I want to spend it with you—

At the End of Our Days
03:45
|
|||
There's a sickness that is spreading to the setting of the sun
I pleaded with the healers they said “Boy, you'd better run
It's a virus steeped in violence and it's growing every day
We tried our best to help the sick but never found a way”
So I looked them in the eye
And I said than I must try
Chorus
At the end of our days
I hope to see
That all this pain
Has set us free
At the end of our days
I know we'll find
That there's some good
In all our minds
I went into the streets and alleys telling everyone
They told me few would help until the damage had been done
We taught the kids in schools in hopes that they would see the truth
But the illness took their minds and bent them to its ugly use
We held our heads up high
And we taught them how to fight
Chorus
At first their tired minds had hidden every sign of hope
But the illness could not change the things their growing souls had known
With time the painful process started clearing all their eyes
'Til slowly they all saw the light that they once had inside
I looked at them and cried
For the years they'd had to hide
The sick and wounded soon came running tearing down our doors
They took the children off to where we could not help them more
But they had learned to fight the illness lingering in their minds
They left the school but not the lessons they had learned behind
And when I dream at night
I see how high they'll rise
Chorus

Songbird
03:54
|

There was a tree
Out in the field
They cut it down
To make a keel
They would set sail
To foreign shores
Where clear streams flowed
Beneath their oars
The family left
The waving grass
To build a house
A home at last
They took their songs
And left that land
They sang as loud
As any man (pause)
Chorus
Though we may not carry the day
When the darkness clouds the way
There is love even in that pain
Like a songbird after the rain
In muddy fields
The horse fell down
She blew and screamed
An awful sound
The daughters wept
Like stormy skies
To mark the day
Their friend had died
But they walked on
Some eighty miles
They would endure

With voices raised

Chorus
They found a beach

The family sang
A praising song
They walked for days

They knew that God
Would make them yield
The years went by
The family grew
They raised their sons
To know the truth
Yet they still sang
About that Day

Faded away
Chorus
A week at sea
Their hope waned thin
The food was scarce
The light grew dim
The winter storms
Chilled to the bone

49 miles ‘cross the wide open plains
The snow paints in streaks on the black roadway
A Nobel prize winner’s on my speakers today

The room’s full of people on a cold sunny day
Now I’m out here on the long highway
You’re still there 49 miles away

Someday I hope that you’ll ask me to stay

These words that I wrote to a bright melody
Might mean that together we’re better than today
When I’m out here 49 miles away
I tell myself clearly you’re out of my league
I’m sure you’ll do better than I’ll ever be
I guess if you do than I’d still be ok
But I’d rather drive 49 miles your way

Sea of Light
03:56
|
|||
Weeks have passed since the terrible fires
And the funeral beds make anyone tired
But don’t let yourself think about giving up
When the ritual started we wanted to leave
But the Priest did his best to make us believe, he said
Don’t let yourself think about giving up
The birds left home and took to the sky
The believers broke down and started to cry, just
Don’t let yourself think about giving up
We all have days to die
But don’t believe the lie
We’ll find ourselves on shores of white
Beneath a sea of light
Years have passed since the den of a liar
Was home to the boys from Ireland’s briars, and we
Won’t let ourselves think about giving up
And the flames of the war can always be seen
On the streets and the fences and homes in between, just
Don’t let yourself think about giving up
‘Cause the soldiers with guns and the soldiers for hire
Are fighting real hard except when they’re tired, but
Don’t let yourself think about giving up
‘Cause we all have things we need
And someday we’ll take the lead
But tonight we’ll walk on tired feet
Beneath a sea of light
And when the church fell down on the
Broken ground we said
We won’t give up
When the fires broke free from the
Dried up streams we said
We won’t give up
We all have days to die
But don’t believe the lie
We’ll find ourselves on shores of white
Beneath a sea of light
Of light, of light, of light, of light

Years have passed since the den of a liar
Was home to the boys from Ireland’s briars, and we
Won’t let ourselves think about giving up
And the flames of the war can always be seen
On the streets and the fences and homes in between, just
Don’t let yourself think about giving up
‘Cause the soldiers with guns and the soldiers for hire
Are fighting real hard except when they’re tired, but
Don’t let yourself think about giving up
‘Cause we all have things we need
And someday we’ll take the lead
But tonight we’ll walk on tired feet
Beneath a sea of light
And when the church fell down on the
Broken ground we said
We won’t give up
When the fires broke free from the
Dried up streams we said
We won’t give up
We all have days to die
But don’t believe the lie
We’ll find ourselves on shores of white
Beneath a sea of light
Of light, of light, of light, of light
